The reading and the lecture give contradictory opinion on whether the employees work for 4 days a week is beneficial or not. The reading states that working a four day workweek for less payment would benefit the economy, the individual companies and the employees who will take this option. The professor suggests that working four days a week will not effect the economy and the employees lives in way of the reading suggests. And he provides several reasons.
First, the professor rejects the claim in the reading that shortened workweek will increase company profits. And he says that this will force the companies to pay more. They will try to hire more workers, and these workers will need training. So the company will pay more for the training and for their medical benefits. Moreover, this will cost the company the same if their workers work for four days or five days. In addition, the more workers will need more office spaces and more computers. And thus will cut into the companies profits.
Second, the lecture explains that working four days a week would not decrease unemployment because companies may take other options like let their workers take an overtime job. And may company will increase its expectations about their workers, and if this happens there is no more additional jobs, and the worker will be pleasant to do their job.
Finally, the paragraph says that four day workweek working would be better for the workers lives. They will have extra time to spend with their families. The lecture suggests quite opposite in this case as well. It says that this will present risk to the workers' quality of life because this will decrease the employees' job ability, and this will prevent them from getting advancement in their carrier. Meanwhile, they will lost their job first and they will not get paid over because companies will prefer the workers who work five days a week.
