Both the reading and lecture are about a portrait related to Jane Austen who was a famous novelist. There is no any picture from this person except a simple sketch of adult Austen that her sister has made it; however, a portrait has been recently introduced by a member of Austen's family as the face of Austen when she was teenager. The reading provides three reasons for verifying this painting. The lecture casts doubts on the claims made in the article. The professor finds all arguments dubious.
First of all, the author of reading declares that in 1822, Austen's family allowed Austen's portrait to publish in one of her letters as her exact face; hence, this permission can confirm that girl in the portrait is Austen. This point is challenged by the professor. He believes when this painting was recognized as Austen, this writer had died for 70 years; consequently, her family could not have discerned her face.
Secondly, the article claims that this portrait is similar to aforementioned sketch above. Features like nose, mouth, and total shape of the face look like those features in the full-length portrait, even though the sketch is related to adult age. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer. The professor elaborates on this by mentioning that Austen's family was populous with a lot of young girls at the same age with Austen; subsequently this portrait could have belonged to one of them especially Austen's niece who was called Merry.
Finally, the reading passage contends that the style of portrait is analogous Ozias Humphrey's style who lived and was active in Austen's teenager age. On the other hand, the professor refutes this and expresses that the canvas of portrait is associated with William Leg. He started to sell his prominent canvases when Austen was older and in 27 age.
