News editors decide what to broadcast on television and what to print in newspapers. What factors do you think influence these decisions? Do we become used to bad news? Would it be better if more good news was reported?

To date, it’s an unavoidable fact that it’s impossible to live without getting any information about new events. There are a variety of ways such as newspapers, magazines, television and radio programs and etc. to get news. Undoubtedly, the editors choose some pieces of news to broadcast or to print. At this point, there are several reasons which I’m going to clarify below influence their choices.

First of all, the selection of news generally depends on the orientation of the TV channel or the newspaper, for instance if the channel or magazine is about sport, the editor must focus on information about sport events like football matches, basketball leagues and so on. The second factor which affects the editors’ choice is the editors’ personal interests. For example, if editor is interested in politics, it means he/she gives priority to political information. Last but not least, the weighty factor is demand of the audience or what people want to know. It is due to the fact that newspapers and TVs try to learn and meet demand by doing different rating researches.

The rating investigations indicate that people are generally interested in bad news. The news about crimes, earthquakes, wars is the kind of information which can be considered as bad news. When it comes to the consideration that people are used to bad news, it is very difficult to insist on this point of view. To me, it is a psychological factor that people pay more attention to bad news.

Naturally, it would be better if the editors report good news at the same proportion as bad news . I strongly believe that these kinds of news radiate positive energy and make people feel happy.

To conclude, from my perspective, we cannot live without news. And the efforts of editors must be appreciated in this process. Both bad news and good news reported by editors are important at the same degree.
