The lecture and the reading both discuss using ethanol fuel as an alternative to gasoline. The reading states that ethanol fuel is not a good replacement for gasoline, and enumerates three reasons of support. However, the lecture disagrees. The professor explains that ethanol fuel is a good replacement for gasoline.

First of all, the reading argues that ethanol will cause increase in the global warming by producing too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The lecture refutes this point by saying that ethanol will not add to the global warming. According to the professor, ethanol is produce from corn which is plant. Plant will counteract the release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Growing plant will absorb and remove the extra carbon dioxide produced by ethanol.

In addition, the reading states that using ethanol as a source of fuel will reduce the amount of corn need to feed other animals. The lecture opposes this claim. The professor says that ethanol could be produced by using celluloses, which would be finding in the plant cell walls. Furthermore, cellulose is not eaten by animals. Hence, the corn amount could be increase to feed more animals.

Lastly, the reading makes an argument that ethanol will never compete with gasoline in price; gasoline is much cheaper than ethanol. The lecture opposes this point saying that ethanol will compete with gasoline in prices. According to the professor, more people will go to support ethanol; increase in the ethanol production will lead to the drop in the prices of the ethanol. Moreover the professor mentions that a study done, proved that increase in the production of ethanol by three times will makes drop in its prices by forty percent.
