The author believes that ethanol, which is a fuel made from corn and sugar cane, is not a good alternative to gasoline. The lecturer, however, has the opposite point of view. He explains why the author is not right about his points.
First, the author asserts that using ethanol contributes to global warming in the same way that gasoline does. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that plants from which the ethanol is produced, fight global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide from the environment.
Second, the author contends that using plants for ethanol production, prevents them from being used for other purposes such as feeding animals. On the other hand, the lecturer states that ethanol can be produced from plant parts which are not consumed by animals, therefore, it does not affect their food.
Finally, the author postulates that prices of the ethanol cannot compete with that of the gasoline in the near future providing that it depends highly on governmental subsidies. The lecturer accepts the claim about subsidies, but in contrast, he suggests that promotion of ethanol use not only leads to its massive production, but also diminishes its price in the long haul.
