Both the reading and lecture are about carved stone balls which have found in Scotland. The mentioned balls are in round form with uniform diameter and some designs. The reading provides three hypotheses as function of these stone balls and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on claims made in the article and finds all arguments dubious.
First of all, the author of reading declares that the stone balls may have been used in hunting or fighting by early humans. Since some balls have holes in them; hence, in the aforementioned holes could have been set grooves then with using a cord, the hunters could throw balls toward enemy or prey. This point is challenged by the professor and she points out that there are a lot of Neolithic weapons such as arrowheads which include some cracks on their surface; however, the stone balls discovered in a very well condition without any damage.
Secondly, since the stone balls have equal diameter- rather 70mm- ; therefore, there is a possibility that stone balls were applied as an early system for weighting of food or grains; in contrast, the professor expresses that since the balls were constructed from different types of stones; consequently, they have diverse masses. It should be said that different stones such as curbside or sand stone have different weights; subsequently, the balls may have be uniform size; however they had difference in weight and one could have be heavier than another.
Finally, the reading passage states that stone balls had some elaborates designs, so they may have employed for showing social statuses. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer and she poses that there is inconsistent evidence about this theory. Some balls were including intricate designs while others had simple ornamentation. Furthermore, the professor notes that in that time - 4000 years ago- when a person was losing his live particularly a person with high rank, some objects which had high level among society, were put into graves; however, any stone ball did not find in Neolithic's graves; so this hypothesis is meaningless.
