There has been some debates among whether the Agnostids were living in the past or not. The reading says that there have been three different theories about where the Agnostids lived. However the lecture disagrees.it claims that all the theories mentioned in the reading had some weakens.
The first area of dispute is that the agnostids were living as a free swimming predators. The lecture says that all swimming predators should have a large developed eyes to help them catch their preys, but the agnostids have had small tiny eyes. They were not able to see well or may be blind. Living as free swimming predators need special other sensory organs in their body to help them to catch their preys, and those special sensory organs were not found in the fossils of the agnostids. However, the reading says that some of the agnostids are strong predators and active swimmers which help them to live as free swimming predators.
Another controversial issue is that the agnostids were dwellers of the sea flower. The lecture claims that sea flower dwellers are moving slowly. They usually localized in one area, on the other hand the agnostids are moving so fast and according to their fossils they were inhabited in many geographical areas. But the reading argues that the agnostids have been living as a sea flower dweller and scavenging dead organisms or grazing on bacteria.
The final point of debate is that the Agnostids were parasites feed on larger organisms . The lecture says that the parasites theory is not true. First the parasites population should not be too large, or it will harm the host they feed on. In the case of the Agnostids there fossils recorded that there population was very large and that contradict the theory that they were living as parasites. Yet, the reading states that many anthropoids that are living those days are parasites, may be the agnostids were also parasites
