Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss about a European silver coin found in the North America. However, the writer holds a completely different point as the lecturer does. The reading passage proposes three pieces of evidence to dispute the truth of the coin as a historical discovery. While the lecturer challenges the statement with three pieces of evidence.
Firstly, the writer says that Maine, where the coin was discovered is far away from the Norse settlements. There is no obvious connection between them. However, the lecturer refutes this point by offering other foreign objects which were found in Maine. This strong evidence suggests the idea that the Natives traveled a long distance within the North America to collect exotic stuff.
Second, the passage claims that there were no other coins found in the Norse, so the coin was not brought by European. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that the Norse did not live in the North America forever. When they went back to the Europe, they packed their valuable property. As a result, the Norse might carry the silver coins to the North America and then bring them back to Europe.
Last but not the last, despite the fact that the Native Americans did not use silver coins as money, the Norse still could make use of coins to trade with the Native Americans. The silver coins are sparkling and shiny. The natives might be attracted by them and use them to make beautiful jewelry such as necklaces.
According to the three pieces of evidence above, the lecturer thinks the silver coin is not a historical fake but a true remain.
