Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss the possibility to send humans to Mars. However, they hold totally opposed points of view.
Firstly, the reading passage claims that the trip to Mars takes about 2 years which is too long for astronauts to prepare enough essential goods to survive during the trip. On the other hand, the lecturer proposes a solution to this problem by growing plants in water rather than soil. Using the technique to transfer reclycling water to drinking water help human cultivate plants in a spaceship by themselve. In addion, plants release oxygen during a special chemical process when they grow. By collecting the released oxygen, astronauts can live in a spaceship without bringing all cargos from the Earth.
Second, the writer points out that it is harmful for human to live in a zero gravity environment for months. However, the lecturer refutes this statement by providing some methods for astronauts to keep health. For example, doing regular exercises and taking vitimin makes astronauts stay health without decreasing muscel mass and lowering bone density in such an environment.
Last but not the least, the writer says that preventing astronauts from over exposed to the space radiation by constructing a shield on the whole surface of a spacecraft is impossible. Nevertheless, the lecturer disputes that there is a period of space radiation. Normally the space radiation will not hurt human. Once the space radiation reaches a dangerous level, astronauts can hide in a shelter. Adding a shelter in the spacecraft will not increase a lot weight.
