TOEFL Official Guide Test2 Writing task 1
The lecture states that we must question the benifits of professors appearing on television.
The passage states that this may benefit the professor as their reputation as an authority in the field would increase. This according to the lecture may not be true. The professors may be labelled by fellow scholars as 'not serious', emphasizing more on entertaining rather than educating. This would affect their professional career as they might not be invited to conferences and could also suffer from reduced funding as a result of their labelling.
The passage states that universities would benefit from increased reputation as a result of public being aware of their 'knowledgable faculty' . There would be more students applying and more funding. The lecture counters this misbelief by stating that the time spent by the professor for rehearsing, presenting, getting TV ready is valuable research time lost. This lost time would definitely affect the university and the students adversely, thus causing a feeling of aversion in motivated candidates.
Finally, the lecture also counters the point that the public would benefit from the 'knowledge and expertise of the learned professor' as stated in the passage. It states that most information provided on TV is not serious or of depth and could as well be gathered and presented by a news reporter with a little research. This is obvious as no one would want deep insights and conclusions while watching a television show just after dinner
