The graph shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK by four different transportation modes between 1974 and 2002.
The first popular transportation mode that commonly used in UK was by road. The goods transported by road in 1974 started with the amount of goods by 70 million tonnes with slightly increased in 1978 by 73 million tonnes. There was a fluctuated amount of goods transported between 1982 and 1998 where the high increasing in the year of 1998 and 2002 by 93.000 and 94.000 million tonnes in succession.
Other transportation modes in UK were by water and rail. In 1974 until 1978, water and rail transported almost the same amount of goods by up to 40 million tones. For water transportation mode, a highly increasing goods transported in 1982 to 1990 by 60.000 million tonnes where in the beginning of 1994 to 1998 it decreased to 51.000 million tonnes and in 2002 it increased by 62.000 million tonnes. Whereas for the rail transportation mode, a fluctuation happened between 1978 and 1998 and it increased by 41.000 in 2002. So rail transportation is the most unstable modes of transport in decades.
The last transportation modes in UK was pipeline. The total amount of goods transported in UK by pipeline was 2 million tones in 1974 – 1978 where it was gradually increased until 2002 by 21 million tones.
In brief, transportation modes by road and pipeline has gradually increase between 1974 and 2001 while there were fluctuations for water and rail and marked differences in the period covered.
