The following is a recommendation from the Board of Directors of Monarch Books.
"We recommend that Monarch Books open a café in its store. Monarch, having been in business at the same location for more than twenty years, has a large customer base because it is known for its wide selection of books on all subjects. Clearly, opening the café would attract more customers. Space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children's book section, which will probably become less popular given that the most recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten. Opening a café will allow Monarch to attract more customers and better compete with Regal Books, which recently opened its own café."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
The argument that "opening a cafe will attract more customers " is not logically convincing. Premise given for argument is that most recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten. Author did not consider crucial assumptions which make argument ineffective as well as unsound.
First assumption argument assumes that significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten will lead to attract more customers by discontinuing the children's book section. Author did not give satisfactory reason for this assumption. Recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten but where? Author did not give any explanation, may be it happened in other cities rather than city in which store was present, where it remained same. So if author discontinuing the children's book section then children who came regularly with their parents, now they will not come. So ultimately children number who visit the store will decline and it will imply to decline customers number because their parents also will not come because parents are concerned about safety of their children.
Second assumption argument consider that Opening a café will allow Monarch to attract more customers and better compete with Regal Books. which is totally unreasonable. Conditions which shape Regal Books will also shape Monarch is not true. May be Regal Books was popular because of their varieties in books and also having limited editions but on other hand monarch does not have these types of limited editions.so even they imitated open cafe like regal book store did, it will not help monarch store to compete regal books. But author did not consider this assumption.
Third assumption argument omits that conditions of both stores are same. which is unreasonable. regal books may be having latest modern facilities but monarch was settled their twenty years ago so probably they had old facilities. For example in regal books seating arrangement, reading atmosphere are all resplendent and awesome but in monarch this is not present so which makes direct conflict with argument.
Ultimately argument is totally ineffective and unsound. Evidence presented by author for argument "opening a cafe will attract more customers " is unsatisfactory. Because it did not consider assumptions listed above. Finally argument can be strengthened by claiming that conditions of both stores are comparable so monarch is possible to compete with regal books, and most recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten this decline also happened in city in which monarch was present.
