Based on the reading material, it is stated that there are some viable theories regarding how Chaco Canyon habitants used their houses. However, the lecturer finds this idea bereft of sufficient reasoning and presents some ideas to the contrary.
Initially, the author argued that these houses were residential owing to the fact that they were very similar to apartment buildings at Taos, New Mexico. That being said, the lecturer repudiated this idea by clarifying that inside of these houses were not appropriate for housing hundreds of people. There were very few fire places which were enough for arround ten families to cook. Also, the few number of rooms inside these houses is a another evidence that they were not residential for hundreds of people.
Another point mentioned by the author was that these houses were used to store food supplies, like grain maze due to the size of the dwellings. However, the lecturer rejected this one too by stating that there is no traces of maize inside the houses. He believes that if they were used for storage, there should have existed some remains of big-maize containers, thus this theory cannot support the author's belief.
The final point advanced in the reading passage was that dwellers used the houses as ceremonial centers due to deposits of broken pots. Yet again, the lecturer casted doubt on this idea. He said that in addition to the deposits of broken pots, there are some deposits of building materials near Pueblo Alto either, which indicate that these pots maybe belong to the workers who worked there. Thus, finding deposits of pots close Pueblo Alto cannot champion the author's statement.
