Based on the reading material, the author stated that the TED's function has been criticized for 3 several reason. However, the professor finds this idea bereft of sufficient reasoning and cites some ideas to the contrary.
Initially, the author argued that some shrimp boats caught turtles only rarely, about one turtle every month. However, the lecturer refuted this idea by stating that there are 1000 shrimp boats operating all over the United Stated and they probably catch 1000 turtles every year. This would be a big problem for turtles' population and their population decrease dramatically. By using the TEDs, turtles population can be recovered and they will not be trapped even by accident.
Another point stated by the author of the reading passage was that other methods, like shortening the time limit that shrimpers can keep their nets underwater, can be more effective that TEDs. That being said, the professor repudiated this one too by clarifying that this method would be plausible in theory, whereas it would be impossible for governments to monitor the time that shrimpers keep their nets underwater in real world. She said that there are 1000 shrimp boats out side in the sea and governments can not see that they really obey this rule or not.
The final point discussed in the reading passage was that TEDs are not effective for larger turtles and they can not escape the passage that standard TEDs provide. Yet again, the lecturer criticized this idea. She stated that the design of the TEDs can be modified easily in a way that larger TEDs can be produced. Hence, by using larger TEDs, larger turtles, like loggerhead and leatherback can escape through the passage that TEDs provide.
