Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
In this argument, one specific document which may have a deterministic effect is the geological changes which might have happened during the past times. To be more detailed, the question is "Has the Brim River always been flowing the same route as it does now?" or "Has the river always had the same depth or width?" . For example, if the path of river's flow has been circuitous in such way that the people of the mentioned villages were not forced to pass the river in order to contact each other, there would be no need to be any boat there. Another given situation may be the possibility of a significant period of drought or some natural restrictions in the river stream that had lessened the dept and width of the river in such a way that people could have cross the river without boats.
Besides these geological hypothetical evidences, one should consider the probability of evolving same patterns in two distinct regions if the pattern is derived from surrounding nature. Many of the artifacts remained from the ancient humans' population showed some touch of natural patterns in their designs; maybe because our ancestors were under the influence of nature and tried to capture the spirit of their habitat in their artisan crafts. Thus, there should be a thorough investigation into the basket patterns and the initial incentive that had led to conformation of such patterns. For instance, if Palean baskets' pattern is derived from a kind of bird's nest, which had been living in that region, then it would be possible that guys of Lithos had adopted the same design to make their baskets without going across the river.
In conclusion, there will be some explanation to why the same type of artifact is found in those two geographically separated regions and new evidences may show how it would happen without commuting by boats.
