While the significance of cooperation in this context should not be understated, I argue that a synthesis of the two views is essential for fostering effective leadership.
Cooperation is undoubtebly a valuable skill. This is particularly true in environments that require teamwork and consensus-building. In sectors like government and non-profit organization, the focus lies in collective welfare; this is where cooperation becomes indispensable. A leader who values cooperation more than one who values it less would undoubtedly be more likely to create an inclusive environment, encourage diverse perspectives, and reach decisions that benefit the community. As an example, consider a government official. Without a cooperative mindset, the official would not be able to balance the varied, and often clashing, interests of different parties.
On the other hand, the exclusive emphasis on cooperation ignores the benefits that can only be reaped through competition. As economists frequently posit, competition drives innovation. Competition can also lead to higher standards of performance and productivity. In the private sector, especially when it comes to industries related to technology, a strong competitive spirit can allow leader to pioneer ground-breaking fields and innovations. Steve Jobs can be looked at as an example in this instance; his creativity was fostered through the competitive environment that his company thrived in.
Critics of competition in the context of leadership might argue that it only fosters a negative and selfish environment, which can be detrimental to teamwork. However, this viewpoint only sees comptetition in its extreme forms, and completely disregards healthy competition. When guided by strong, ethical institutions, competition can coexist and even strengthen cooperation. This leads to leaders with more balances and dynamic temperaments. Leaders who have the ability to navigate competitive environments ethically are better equipped to face real-world challenges.
While instilling cooperation in young people is important for leadership, the role of competition must not be overlooked. A balanced approach will likely lead to leaders who are not only empathetic, but are also innovative and capable. Therefore, society should aim to foster both these qualitites in young people as dynamic leader is a strong leader.
