Some people believe that competition for high grades motivates students to excel in the classroom. Others believe that such competition seriously limits the quality of real learning.
when I go to school to attend the first class of the course, I also look upon who I attend with or whether the professor's teaching style is appropriate with me, but the most important thing I look upon is the way the professor grade his or her students. Depending on how the professor grade the score, the preparation of the exam changes. I agree that the competition itself is essential to motivate students to exceed their innate abilities, however only a specific kind of competition would do its job.
In the first place, the educational institutions should encourage students to be competitive. when the students attend the course, some students are eager to understand every word that the professor said and analyze what they had understood, apply to the real world. On the other hand, some students boringly sit in the classroom, listening to the professor's lecture because they know that taking a course will help to fulfill the dream one day. however, the dream itself is too vague and far away to grasp. The educational institutions have the authority to encourage students to attend the course eagerly by setting a precise and close goals, give a message that by achieving the goals, let know by heart that the student is going one step closer to the dream.
however, it would be meaningless if the purpose of the test is focused on measuring the student's memorizing ability or how fast the student could calculate. Those tests would make students no more than an encyclopedia or a calculator rather than task solving, active person. For example, Korean SAT is consisted of 80% of one-from-five-statements problems and 20% short-description problems with little distinction problems for bad, good and excellent student. As a result, Korean high school students try to become a good student who make no mistakes than an excellent student who make few mistakes because the result is same. being creative is avoided and being accurate like a machine is recommended.
I suggest that the purpose of the test should be focused on estimating the student's creativity and helping students to know what to do on real situations. To do this, the main content of the test would be describing specifically about how to solve the problem on given situations or doing projects about the topic that is given. Through the test, the student will instinctively understand how the variables of the equation correspond with the real world phenomena or know how many things to consider to understand and explain the topic to other.
In conclusion, I strongly recommend that educational institutions should give evaluations to students in order to help them to achieve their dreams. however, the institutions should choose the type wisely by focusing its purpose on creativity and real world task solving.
