The bar chart compares the sales of four various types of electronic games around the globe over the course of seven years, starting from 2000 to 2006. Units are measured in billions of US dollars.
Overall, it can be observed that worldwide sales for most of the digital games experienced an upward trend, except for console games. Handheld games had the highest number in terms of the sales throughout this period which was at least double any other games.
According to the chart, in 2000, the sales figure for handheld games was close to 11 billion dollars, this figure experienced dramatic growth and reached its peak at slightly under 18 billion dollars, keeping it the most popular games among other platforms. On the contrary, console games initially sold a large quantity of precisely 6 billion dollars, which was 2 times lower than the sales of console games at the same time. However, there was a decline in selling console games as it continued to drop to hit its lowest point of less than 3 billion dollars in 2006.
Global sales of online and mobile phone games followed a similar pattern. Even though, both of them appeared later in the global market later than the others but those sales were increasing annually. In 2002, those two games registered the same figures of around 1.5 billion dollars. Over the next 6 years, the increase was seen in sales revenues of both types of games about 8 and 9 billion dollars respectively.
