According to this bar chart, 25-34 year olds either bought or rented a house in the UK during 2004-2014.
During the period, homeowners experienced a downward trend, whereas renters showed an upward trend. Ownership has been fluctuating dramatically since 2004. The owner rate reached its peak in 2004, with a rise of just under 60%. Towards the end of the period, renters are more attractive to homeowners than they were at the beginning.
Ownership in the UK was by far the highest in 2004, with nearly 60% of people owning a home. At the time, the number of people renting homes was three times higher. The percentage remained almost the same until 2008. From then on, it dropped gradually until reaching about 42% in 2011. Afterward, it remained the same for one year and then dropped slightly to approximately 35% in 2014.
In comparison, 20% of people aged 24-35 years lived in rental housing in 2004. Renter numbers dramatically increased by nearly 30% during this period. In most years, the increase ranged from a few percent to a few percentage points. Lastly, the rental market reached its peak in 2014 with just barely under 50%.
