The chart below show family expenditure in the UK between 1980 and 2010.
The graph gives information about the family outlay in the UK over a 30-year timespan.
Overall, what stands out from the chart is that whilst the proportion of utility bills was the highest, the reverse was true for others. Another noteworthy point is there were several differences in the spending on food items, vehicles, and leisure activities.
In 1980, the money earmarked for utility bills and leisure activities was roughly the same, around 27%. The money channeled into spare time activities was significantly lower, registering 18% in 1990. Starting at 23% in the year 1980, the outlay on leisure grew minimally to 29% in the next 10 years. The amount allocated to bills and vehicles was 15% and 26% but later rose gradually to 17% and 27% over a decade.
Ten years later, recreational activities made up the largest proportion of the family's expenditure. Starting from the point 17% in the year 1980, the spending then doubled to 34% in 2000. The money used for food and beverage jumped substantially, from 13% in the year 2000 to 25% in the next 10 years. During this period, transport costs and service costs took roughly a minority and almost a third of household expenditure respectively, which increased marginally from the year 2000. The figure for other spending remained stable through a 30-year timescale. Utility bills were half as popular as other outlay for families.
