The two pie charts illustrate the percentage of university students in Britain who could speak more than one language besides English over the duration of a decade, from 2000 to 2010.
Overall, more students were able to speak Spanish over both periods, while students who expressed German only or two other languages comprised the least percentages.
In 2000, Spanish-speaking students constituted the largest demographic, at 30%. This figure rose slightly by 5% a decade later. Similarly, those who were fluent in another language besides English also saw an increase from 15 to 20% by the end of the period. In contrast, French-speaking students experienced the inverse of this change over time.
On the other hand, the proportion of students who knew no other language except English accounted for 20% in 2000. This statistic decreased by half, ten years later, while students proficient in German only or two other languages experienced no change over the duration, remaining constant at 10%.
