The chart below shows the changes in car ownership in Great britain between 1961 and 2001.
Write a report summarizing the information. Select and describe the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Presenting data in percentage terms, the provided line graph depicts changes in the trends in the ownership of cars in the UK from 1961 to 2001.
Overall, the car was a much less accessible item in the 1960s than after 2000. Also, while the ratio of two or more car owners and the percentage of those who did not own the car were reversed and more gradual, the one-car trajectory was more erratic.
As for detail, nearly 65 percent of households did not have a car of their own in 1961, and none of the families owned two or more cars. The following decade saw a marked rise in one-car owners from about 35 percent to approximately 45 percent and a similar shift towards two cars in the family (ranging from 0% to just above 10%). From 1971 and onwards, the trends of no-car and one-car ownership became inversed, whereby the proportion of owners with one car continued growth, peaking at 50 percent in 1981, whereas percentage of without cars kept on decreasing to 35 percent at the same time. The trajectory of owners who had 2 cars, though, was not as substantial as it was in the previous 10 years.
During the second observation period, the established trend continued for no-car and two or more car owners, whose number became equal by 2001, amounting to 30%. However, the percentage of househols with one automobile deviated from the previous trajectory, recording a slight drop to nearly 45 percent.
