This bar chart illustrates the distribution of the modes of transport adopted by 5-to-12-year-old children in their journeys to school, providing a comparison between the years 1990 and 2010.
During this twenty-year period of elapsed time, it is notable that there were significant changes. Indeed, taking the car replaced walking as the most common way to travel. Further. cycling, taking a bus or a combination of walking and taking a bus all declined over this time period.
Specifically. in 1990 most school children made return journeys to school on foot totalling over 12 million trips a year. This was by far the most popular mode of transport, being used almost twice as much as the second most common choice, the bus. which accounted for approximately 7 million trips. Further. a cumulative of total 12 million trips were made by cycling or walking and taking a bus. However. during this year, few children were taken to school by car, totalling just over 4 million trips.
Radical changes occurred over this two-decade time period. In 2010, the use of a car to make return trips to school became an exceedingly popular choice. Indeed, it proceeded to go from the least to the most common way of travelling, totalling over 11 million trips in 2010. Conversely, walking plummeted by more than 50%. placing second after the use of car. Moreover, travelling by bus, walking and taking a bus, and cycling all decreased in use, from approximately 19 million to 10 million trips combined.
