Then, the number remained stable at around 5% over the next four years, before slightly rising to 6% in the last year.
The number of emigration stood at around 60,000 in 1988, and it fell to about 55,000 in the next two years. Following that, the figure plunged to about 35,000 in 1992 and falling slightly in the next twelve years. Finally, in 2004 the number stepped up gradually, finishing the period at just below 50,000.
