The charts below give information about different types of waste disposed of in one country in 1960 and 2011. Summarize the information be selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The given pie charts provide insight into the percentage of various kinds of waste discarded in a nation between 1960 and 2011.
Overall, it can be seen that during the period, there was a noticeable decrease in the amount of paper, textiles, and other waste disposed of in that country. In contrast, some items such as plastic, wood, and food were thrown away in a larger quantity, whereas, the proportion of green waste, metal, and glass discarded stayed at a constant level.
Looking at the charts in more detail, in 1960, paper made up a quarter of the whole chart, and dominated other waste items, before declining to 15% and being replaced in its top rank by food waste in 2011. A similar trend could be observed in the number of textiles, standing at 17% in 1960 and experiencing a downward tendency in 2011, about 11%. Also, the percentage of other waste materials decreased significantly from 12% in 1960 to 4% in 2011.
Turning to the opposite tendency, there was a remarkable upsurge in the amount of food during the period from 1960 to 2011. More specifically, food constituted roughly 12% in 1960 and then experienced a 9% increase in 2011, and came out on top of the chart. Moreover, the amount of plastic waste thrown away increased substantially by 10% and accounted for 18% in 2011. The proportion of wood discarded in 2011, which stood at 8%, doubled compared to 1960. Finally, the portion of glass, metal, and green waste remained nearly unchanged during the period, with 5%, 8%, and 9%, in turn.
