The charts below portray the proportion of households owning three electrical appliances(Washing machine, Refrigerator, Vacuum cleaner) and depicts the amount of hours of housework per week in each household, between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, we can observe that, between 1920 and 2019 the amount of households owning washing machine, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners have increased and along with that the total time spent behind housework each week in every household has been going down. So we can see a general trend; the time spent behind housework is decreasing as the fraction of households owning electrical appliances is increasing.
First of all, the electrical appliance that experienced the sharpest increase in usage is the Refrigerator, going from 0% in 1920 to 100% in 1980 and that figure stayed constant till 2019. The appliance that experienced the second steepest rise was the Vacuum cleaner. Initially, the percentage of families owning Vacuum cleaners was 30% and it grew to 100% in 2000 which and the value did not fall off. Next is the Washing machine, which did experience an overall increase in the number of households owning them, starting from 40% in 1920 to a little more than 7 out of 10 families owning them in 2019.
Lastly, if we look at the second graph we can infer a downward trend in the time, that each household spent every week behind house chores. The value was the highest(50 hours per week) in 1920 and it gradually decreased to 10 hours a week in 2019.
