The line graphs demonstrate the variation that has taken place in the ownership of electrical appliances of households and the amount of hours spent on doing housework and households in a specific country from 1920 to 2019.
In general, while the number of households owning electrical appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners increased over this course, the amount of time taken to complete housework per week per household witnessed a significant decrease.
Regarding electrical equipment, there were upward trends occurring throughout nearly a century in utilizing these useful machines in households. Washing machines experienced a sharp increase in its first 40 years from 40% in 1920 to 70% in 1960. The figure suffered from a decline in the next 20 years by nearly 10%, before rebounding until the end of the period, at over 70%. While vacuum cleaners had a remarkable increase over the 1900s from 30% in 1920 to 100% in 2000 and stayed unchanged to the end of the time frame, refrigerators witnessed a steep jump when starting at 0% in 1920 and quickly reaching 100% in 1980, making way for a stable growth by 2019.
In terms of hours spent doing housework per week per family, the data showed, firstly, a strong decline from 1920 to 1960, with 50 hours and 20 hours, respectively. Between 1960 and 2019, this figure continually decreased but not as sharply as in the first 40 years, at 10 hours in 2019 per household in a week.
