The charts below show the number of people in Europe who were affected by four types of noise by day and by night in cities and rural areas in 2007.
The bar charts compare the quantities of Europeans who had to suffer from
different kinds of noise in the daytime and nighttime between cities and rural
areas in 2007.
Overall, traffic was the main reason for noise in both periods and the number of
noise sufferers in urban areas was higher than in rural ones.
68 million city dwellers became victims of traffic noise in daytime, which nearly
doubled the figure recorded in the countryside. In comparison, traffic noise was a
less severe problem with them in nighttime, but the quantity of victims in cities
was still twofold higher than in rural areas, at 48 and 24 million respectively.
A smaller number of people both in urban and rural areas had troubles with noise
from trains by day, recording 10 and 8 million respectively, which was 2 million
higher than the figures at night. Noises from aircraft and industry did not affect
people in both areas much, with its figure under 4 million. Strikingly, nobody living
in the countryside were affected by industrial noise.
