Overall, it is clear that except for clothing, people's spending in all aspects changed quite substantially over the fifty-year period.
In 1958, clothing was spent commonly, it accounted for the largest portion of people's expenditures, at 32 percent. In addition, housing with 22 percent and entertainment with 18 percent were the two second-main expenditures that took up a bulk amount of spending. While people used only approximately a quarter of their total consumer spending on luxury goods, food, and travel or transport at seven percent, eight percent, and 13 percent respectively.
