Essay topics:

The charts below show the proportion of people’s spending on different commodities and services in a particular European country in 1958 and in 2008.

The two pie charts represents how much people spent on various good and services in one European country, between the years 1958 and 2008.

Overall, it is evident that people’s expenditure on housing, food and luxury goods increased over the period shown, while spendings on entertainment, transportation and clothings followed an opposite trend.

In 1958, Clothings took up the largest segment of the total expenditure, which is nearly a third. About a quarter of people’s budget went on housing at 22 per cent. Meanwhile, the figures recorded for transport and entertainment facilities were 13% and 18% respectively, compared to just 7% and 8% spent on food and luxury.

In 2008, Housing became a necessity with an increment of 10% to 32 percentage. Similarly, luxury commodities and food also experienced substantial rise in expenses, with figures reaching to 17% each. However, there was a significant reduction in expenditure for traveling and clothing, as figures dropped to 6% and 12%, while the proportion allocated for refreshments remained relatively stable, with a slight decline from 18% in 1958 to 16% in 2008.
