Overall, there was an increase in the proportion of total expenditure on luxury goods, accommodation, travel/transport, whereas the figures for food, clothing and recreation collectively decreased in a particular European country in those years. Additionally, the percentage of expenditure on food experienced the most dramatical rise.
In 1958, the rate of money spent on food was highest, at 32%, while the figure for clothing was significantly lower, at 18%. The proportions of budget allocated for housing and entertainment accounted for 22% and 13% respectively. At the same time, people in the nation examined paid around 7% of their budget for each luxury products and transportation.
In 2008, the share of money allocated for accommodation sharply increased to 32% and became the highest figure in the chart. Similarly, the figures for lavish items and commuting rose to the same rate, at 17%. By contrast, the country surveyed witnessed decreases to 16%, 12%, and 6% in the percentage of expenditure on clothing, food and entertainment respectively.
