The two pie charts illustrate the spending method in the United States between 1966 and 1996.

Overall, computers contributed the least to the expenses of Americans at the beginning of the period, while food made up the biggest cost. In comparison, in 1996, cars became the largest expenditure of United States and books made up the smallest part of spending.

Computers accounted for 1% of United States' payments in 1966 and experienced a shoot up to 10% in 1996. Spending on eating out doubled from 7% in 1966 to 14% in 1996. Cars accounted for 23% at the beginning of the period with 23% and rise sharply to 45% and made up the first biggest item of Americans in 1996.

In 1966, the highest percentage of household expenses in US was food with the figure of 44% , dropped to 14% in 1996. Pay outs from gas and furniture were 9% and 16% respectively, but both fell slightly to 8% at the end of the period. Spending in books accounted for 6% in 1966 and declined to 1% in 1996.
