When we use matches at a barbecue we probably do not think about how they are produced. So here I will talk a little bit a diagram that I received explaining how they are made.
There are almost 20 sequential steps to confection a match.
At the beginning of the process the wood arrives and the outside part is peeled of with a blade, the next step is to chop the fresh wood in equal sizes and give them a bath of Ammonium Phosphate at a tank, after that the humidity must be quickly reduced at a dryer machine.
The middle of the process is about stabilizing the wood, so a blower equipment gets in action to remove any residual water and then transfers the pieces to a storage area where the wood sticks will rest for a period of time and controlled temperature for its wood fibers to accommodate and assure resistance properties to guarantee the match will not break when used by consumers.
The last phase is about inserting the matches at the same position and building the head through the addition of three substances that are placed in tanks one after the other (paraffin wax, based chemicals and tip chemicals – in this respective order, which is important to assure the sparkle will be generated with the friction we apply when we want to light up the matches). The head is than dried with room temperature and natural belt movement until it is packed exactly as they will arrive at our homes.
