The diagram below shows the development of cutting tools in the Stone Age. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The diagram illustrates a stone hand axe’s evolution during the Paleolithic period, with the comparison of the cutting tool dated 1.4m years ago and the one made around 0.8m years ago.
From an overall perspective, the axe shows exquisite craftsmanship during the course of humankind, with the refinement of sharpness and smoothness.
Traced back to 1.4 million years ago, tool A remained a stone’s primitive shape with an estimated 8cm long and rudimentary surface. From the front view, both ends look nearly the same in width, while the back view still shows its rudiment. It is this factor that made the utilization of the tool more challenging and less effective.
In comparison, after the development made 800 thousand years ago, tool B showed a higher level of craftsmanship, meaning that its efficiency had also been significantly advanced. In particular, it appeared to be double its predecessor’s size. A look at the front view reveals that the tool had been ground so carefully that it formed a droplet shape with more refined edges and a sharper tip, which facilitates the cutting process.
