The diagram below shows how electricity is generated from coal.
The diagram illustrates the method of manufacturing electricity from burning coal and oxygen.
In general, it is observed that coal is burned at first and the resulting gases undergo each process to produce electricity.
To begin with, coal is added to the furnace which stays open to allow the flow of oxygen gas. After heating, there are three products namely two gases such as raw syngas and hot exhaust gases and pieces of slag.
Among the three products, hot exhaust gases are passed through the heat recovery steam generator to get steam. Following this, the steam turbine connected to the generator receives steam to generate electricity. For the raw syngas, it undergoes the removal stage to extract purified syngas and remove impurities namely carbon dioxide, mercury, and Sulphur. The resulting pure syngas is afterward mixed with slag, which comes from the furnace and formed into electricity by going into the gas turbine with the generator. The end product, electricity, will be flowed through high-voltage cables for public or industrial use.
