The diagram below shows how the power of water is used to generate electricity.

The provided diagram depicts the way by which electricity is harnessed from water power. As illustrated, four stages are required to produce hydroelectric energy.

In the beginning of the process, water flow is collected in a reservoir and passed through an intake structure into a dam which raises it to create falling water. In the next stage, the falling water is regulated and flowed down through a sluice gate to a turbine which is connected to a generator. The pressure water flow creates, triggers the turbine to spin and thereby the potential energy of falling water is converted to mechanical energy. Then, as another result of the turbine spinning, the generator is also activated causing the transformation of the existing mechanical energy into hydroelectricity and the remaining water is released. Finally, as the newly produced current’s voltage is high, it is carried out to a substation transformer in order to reduce its voltage to 220-240 volts and after that it is supplied to different places.

In summary, it can be seen that the procedure begins with trapping water in the reservoir and ends with the transfer of the hydroelectric power to its various destination via transmission lines.
