In contrast, drugs sales rose from $35 to $98 over the same period of time, slightly less than a threefold increase. One further point to note is that both alcohol and drugs reached a peak of $186 billion and $102 billion in 1980 respectively. The biggest difference in sales between alcohol and drugs was in 1975 where sales were $146 billion and $35 billion respectively, a difference of $111 billion.
