The diagrams below show the design for a wind turbine and its location.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The diagrams illustrate the structure of a wind turbine and its optimum locations for installation. As is shown, while there is similarity in the construction of the turbine, the locations for placing the machine can be different.
The turbine consists of a big tower which is made of steel. On top of this is a generator mounted to produce an output of up to 1.5 megawatts. In order for it to work, a three-blade rotor which can be either made of fiberglass or wood is assembled directly at one end of the generator. Information about the speed and direction of these blades is recorded by a sensor attached above the generator which is then sent to a controlling center to be adjusted by a computer.
Regarding its locations, the turbine can be positioned onshore. This can be either on top of a high hill where maximum wind strength is received or by residents’ houses, yielding as high as 100 kilowatts for domestic use. On the other hand, it can be installed offshore where not only can the turbine get strong wind, but it also has no impact on the countryside landscape.
