The diagrams below show some principles of house design for cool and for warm climates.

The diagrams compares house layout in two different types of climate.

It is clear from the diagrams that there are many differences between house design for cool and warm climate such as shapes of the houses, materials used and positions of features of the houses.

The first thing to notice is the shapes of the houses. Houses in cool climate have an one-sided roof dropping down from a high angle, whereas for houses in warm climate, they have two-sided roof which is built by reflective materials and overhang for shade. In cool climate, houses are built with thermal materials to store heat as well as to reduce heat loss. In warm climate, insulation are only installed on the top of the houses which helps to remove stored heat inside the house.

Houses in cool weather have only one window placed toward the direction of the sun so the houses could absorb more heat from the sun. On the other hand, houses in warm weather have two windows placed in two sides of the room. These windows are closed and covered during the day but opened in the evening to take advantage of ventilation, which removed stored heat.
