The first chart below shows the results of a survey with sample the cross section of 100,000 people asking if they travelled abroad and why they travel for the period 1994 to 1998. The second chart shows their destinations over the same period

Given in the table is information collected by a survey carried out on UK residents' purposes of travelling abroad and given in the bar chart are places where they mainly went to.
As shown in the illustration, from 1994 to 1998 British went overseas chiefly for holiday and their main choice of final destination was Western Europe. The total trend was upwards.
Having a closer look at the table, it can be reckoned that holiday abroad retained a fully dominant features and was in its trend in increase( being about 15246 people in 1994 and reaching 20700 people in 1998). Moreover, some British chose to travel abroad for business, with figures about five times and six times lower than those of holiday reason in 1994 and 1998 respectively. Followed by that was visits to friends and relatives. Other reasons recorded the lowest number compared with others, and the figures were rather unstable during the period.
Among the areas picked as destinations, Western Europe was chosen by a majority of tourists while North America was of the least options. The gap between those two places was huge, as the number of English visitors to Western Europe was nine times higher than that of North America. Furthermore, from 1994 to 1995, the number of British to Western Europe dwindled but upsurged again toward 1998. During the same time, North America remained stabilized. English visitors also opted for other areas, but the number of them was far lower than that went to Western Europe.
