The first chart below shows the results of a survey which sampled a cross-section of 100,000 people asking if they traveled abroad and why they traveled for the period 1994-98. The second chart shows their destinations over the same period.
The charts give information about destinations of visits abroad and the purposes of visits by UK residents between 1994-1998 years.
As regards, the first it is obvious that holiday was the main purpose of a significant majority’s visits in given years at the chart. 15,246 people have visited abroad for holiday purposes. Later, the number has substantially increased in the following years. The business was the other reason why people visited abroad, and 3,155 people visited for this purpose. In 1998, the number increased to 3,957. There was an increase in the number of people who visited abroad to see their friends and relatives. The number rose from 2,689 to 3,181 within the 1994-98 period. Other reasons grew from 982 to 1,054 till 1997, later declined.
Western Europe was the area that most people from the UK visited and the number of people visiting that place increased throughout the years except in 1995 it decreased to 19,371 to 18,944. North America followed the same trend and in 1995 the number fell as well. However, the number of people who visited other areas kept surging.
By and large, most people visited West Europe also, most people’s purpose of the visit was the holiday, while business and to see friends, relatives followed by.
