The graph below compares changes in the birth rates of China and the USA between 1920 and 2000. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The line graph illustrates how the birth rates of China and the USA changed from the year 1920 to the year 2000. It is clear that fertility rates of both nations followed similar trends of change, with a noticeable drop in the 1940s and a peak in the 1950s.

In 1920, the birth rates in China and the USA were approximately 10 percent and 11 percent respectively. China’s rate surged to 15 percent in 1935, the USA’s rate to about 13. Afterward, China experienced a significant drop to about 5 percent in 1940, the USA, likewise, in 1945. Another rapid growth happened in 1950, with China’s rate rocketing to a peak of 20 percent and the USA’s rate soaring to 15 percent. In 1950s, while the USA’s rate started going down gradually, a dramatic decline brought the rate to 9 percent in China in 1955. The downward trend continued. In the year 2000, China’s rate was down to 2 percent and the USA’s was 7 percent.

Before 1955, both countries fluctuated in fertility rates. The USA had a higher rate in the 1920s, the early and the late 1930s, and the early 1940s, while China exceeded the USA by around 2 percent in the year 1935 and by roughly 5 percent in 1950. For nearly 45 years since 1955, nevertheless, the USA surpassed China with a relatively larger discrepancy until the end of the period in the graph.
