The graph below gives information about car ownership in the UK from 1975 to 2005.

The line graph illustrates the percentage of people having their own car per household in the UK over a period of 36 years.

Overall, As can be seen from the graph, the number of car owners increased during the period. In particular, Britain’s household without a car declined significantly while that with one car was the most common situation.

In 1975, nearly half of the UK population had one car while people with no car took up a smaller percentage, at approximately 30%. These figures both declined over the following ten years, to around 37% for people having one car and 23% for those with no car. Over the next 20 years, while the percentage of families owning one car rose again gradually, finishing the period at nearly the same value as in the beginning, households without a car continued to decline to just under 20%.
At the beginning of the period, families that owned two or three cars were approximately 7% and 3% respectively, and both experienced increases over the next 10 years to around 13% and 5% respectively.
