Overall, all population percentages have been experiencing un upward trend and are expected to remain unchanged in the future. It is also worth pointing out that most Malaysians are predicted to reside in major cities in the future.
To begin with, depite starting at the second-highest position initially, the percentage of Malaysian people dwelling in cities have witnessed a remarkable incline of over 40%, surpassing Philippines counterparts at the beginning of the 90s and becoming dominant in 2020. Moreover, it is reported that in 1970, the figure for Philioppines was slightly higher than that of Malaysia (about 32%). However, in the next two decades, this number climbed up dramatically to around 45% before flattening out in 2020, though there was a mild drop in 2010. By 2040, it is estimated that both percentages of Philippines and Malaysians residents in cities will have risen noticeably by just under 10%.
Turning to the other set of data, at the beginning of the period, Thailand and Indonesia population accounted for nearly 20% and 15% respectively. In the next 50 years, while the figure for Thailand increased noticeably to roughly 30%, that of Indonesia experience a drastic rise, reaching the second-highest figure at approximately 50%. In the future, both Thailand and Indonesia are anticipated to show a significant growth of roughly 10%
