The graph below shows the consumption of 3 spreads from 1981 to 2007

The line graph above illustrates the use of margarine, low fat and reduced spreads, and butter in the years between 1981 and 2007. Units are measured in grams.

Overall, butter and margarine consumption declined/decreased over the given period. In contrast, low fat and reduced spreads, which were introduced in 1996, had an opposite trend.

In 1981, butter was the most popular spread, followed by butter. People consumed each just above 140 grams and about 90 grams, respectively. After peaking at 160 grams in 1986, consumption of butter plunged by 90 grams in 1996, then the decline was gradual to 50 grams in 2007. From 1981 to 2001, margarine consumption fluctuated between 80 and 100 grams, followed by a significant drop to 40 grams, by 2007.

People started to use low fat and reduced spreads since 1996. In the beginning, 10 grams were utilized, while in 2001, this number was eight times higher. By 2007, this figure saw a slight decrease of 10 grams.
