The graph below shows the number of trips made by children in one country to travel to and from school in 1990 and 2010 using various modes of transport. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The bar chart illustrates the ways to commute to and from an educational institution by various transportation means for 5-12 years old pupils within 1990 and 2010.
It is obvious that although a majority of the young choose to attend school by bus rather than other means of transportation, they changed their mind to become car passengers in 2010.
In 1990, the number of car commuters was 4 million and that of bus was significantly higher with 12 million. However, the opposite was true in the next 20 years as the figure for car passengers was triple that in the first year, whereas the number of trips made by bus reduced by half in comparison to that in 1990.
Looking at the chart in more detail, for walking and cycling, their figures both stood at 6 million at the beginning of the period and dropped to around 2 – 3 million in 2010. Meanwhile, there was a slight decrease in the number of children both choosing to use bus and walk to school, from nearly 7 million to just above 5 million during the 20-year period.
