The line graph illustrates the proportion of employees from Netherlands,France, Sweden, UK and Germany that were absent for a day or more because of illness over the course of 10 years starting from 1991.
Overall, there was a significant upward trend in the number of workers having absence in Netherlands and Sweden over the period, while employees in France saw a considerable decrease at the same period. Another interesting fact is that the absence of employees in America and Germany underwent a moderate increase until the end of the time surveyed
To begin with, the figure for those having absence due to illness in Netherlands began the period at just under 5%, about 2% above those in Sweden. Over the next 5 years, the percentage of employees witnessed a decline to approximately nearly 4%, while workers with illness absence in Sweden rose slightly to nearly 3,5%.From 1996 to 2001, the number of employees in both two countries experienced a significant growth, surpassing the former figures and reaching a peak in 2001 of just under 5,5% in Netherlands and nearly 4,5% in Sweden
By contrast, the number of workers with illness absence in France saw a dramatic decrease from 5% to just above 3% over the first 5 years of the period before plateauing until the end of the time surveyed.In addition to, the figures for employees in UK and Germany were similar, at
around 2% in each country.
