The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph illustrate the number of people as a percentage, from 65 years and above between 1940 and a projection unto 2040 in Japan, Sweden and USA.
Overall, Japan has the least number of people from 65 plus in from 1940, though, it is estimated that from 2020, a sharp increase will be experienced above all other 3 countries. It is noticeable that, USA has the majority of over 65 in it's population from 1940 to 2000, while Sweden overtook USA and became the highest with major number of above 65, as it is projected to be superceded by Japan from 2020s. Generally, there was an increase in population of 65 years plus in all countries.
Highlighted on the chart, Japan has the least number of above 65 in 1940, at 5% and it fell to approximately 4% in 1960. It remained constant up to late 1980s, which was followed by a gradual increase in 2020 and it is projected to continue rising to above 25% in 2040. It is estimated that it will fluctuate above all other nations.
Furthermore, USA had the highest population of people over 65 from 1940 to 2000, at around 9% in 1940 and it increased dramatically to 15% in 1980 and a partial steady decrease was noted below Sweden from late 1990s. Therefore, it is projected to rise to about 24% in 2040 below other 2 countries, while Sweden was at almost 7% in 1940. It rose moderately to around 14% in 1980. A slight decline was noted in 2000 to approximately 13%. A sharp increase was experienced in 2000, at 20%, superceded by a considerable drop to around 17% and an estimated rapid growth to about 25% in 2040.
