The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The line graph displays the UK in terms of the quantities of good transportation using the road, water, rail, and pipeline transports from 1974 to 2002, and it is measured by millions of tonnes.
Overall, the number of items delivered in 3 out of 4 modes of transportation experienced an upward trend, excluding the rail one remaining stable during the period shown. Also, the road mode was the most favorable for items transportation.
Initially, the products that transported on the road were by far the highest chosen by the producers, increasing steadily by almost 10 million tonnes in 1990. Also, pipeline users experienced a significant increase in the beginning of six years but then the similar figure remained reasonably steady in the rest of the period at around 25 million tonnes. The figure for water and rail started at an almost similar level, but then the former rose steadily at just above 60 million tonnes, and the latter showed the reverse at around 35 million tonnes.
In 2002, the use of the road in good transportation continued to grow throughout the period, reaching a peak of almost 100 million tonnes. While the figure for pipeline experienced a minimal decline, then it was stable until the end of the year. As the utilizing of rail for delivering good saw a steady incline to the 1974 level, the gap between rail and water modes became narrower at roughly 10 million tonnes.
