The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The line graph compares the products in the United Kingdom in terms of their ways of transport during the period from 1974 to 2002.
Road transport was the most important transportation throughout the period: despite fluctuations from time to time, the amount of goods transported by car showed an overall upward trend and rose to nearly 100 million tonnes in 2002.
Waterway transportation was as important as railway before 1978, when a noticeable increase was seen in waterway and the railway experienced a decline, widening the gap between the two modes. From 1980 to 1998, the quantities of goods carried by boats underwent some ups and downs, before roaring to around 65 million tonnes, a 25 million increase from 1974. In terms of railway, the pattern was more volatile, reaching the lowest point at 30 in 1994 and then climbing back to around 40 million in 2002.
The figures for pipeline showed a much clearer increasing trend, growing from less than 10 million in 1974 to more than 10 million in 1994 and remained unchanged thereafter, although the speed of increase was higher during the 1978-1982 and 1990-1994 periods.
Overall, all the four transportation modes transported more goods in 2002 than in 1974, despite some fluctuations, and roadway transportation has always been the most important way in the UK.
